Google is laying off employees again.
This time, it's the Google Cloud division, cutting 15% — roughly 7,000 people. Pichai was blunt in his internal memo: AI automation can already replace many traditional roles.
Which roles are most affected?
- Site Reliability Engineers (SRE): automated operations tools have matured enough
- Junior developers: AI tools like Copilot/Cody have doubled the efficiency of senior engineers
- Some mid-level management: flattening + AI-assisted decision-making
Trend assessment
The wave of layoffs at major US tech companies won't stop. At its core, this is a structural shift in talent demand driven by AI productivity gains. Work that used to require 10 people can now be done by 5 people plus AI.
For newcomers, the old path of "grinding LeetCode to get into a big tech company" is getting increasingly difficult. You need real technical depth, not just CRUD skills.
