TikTok Shop has released its 2025 GMV figures: over $50 billion globally. That's 10 times the number from three years ago.
Regional Performance
- Southeast Asia: The largest market, accounting for 60% (Indonesia is the absolute powerhouse)
- United States: Fastest-growing, reaching $8 billion in GMV in 2025
- UK/Europe: Steady growth
- Brazil/Latin America: Just getting started but growing remarkably
Why It Works
China's livestream commerce model has been fully replicated overseas:
- Short-video seeding → Livestream conversion → Marketplace repurchase
- Algorithmic recommendations precisely match users
- Low barrier to opening a store (even individuals can open a shop)
- Logistics and payments are handled by the platform
The Difference from Shein/Temu
Shein and Temu are low-price e-commerce, relying on supply chains and subsidies. TikTok Shop is content commerce, built on "discovery shopping" — users who had no intention of buying end up placing orders while scrolling.
Challenges
US data security reviews are still ongoing. TikTok says it has stored all US user data on Oracle's servers, but political pressure remains.
Regardless, TikTok's monetization capabilities are truly formidable.
