Why Read Source Code

How to Read
1. Start from the Entry Point
Find the main function or the first line of code that handles a request, then follow the call chain downward.
2. Draw a Call Graph
No tools needed—paper and pen are enough. Summarize each function's purpose in one sentence.
3. Ignore the Details
On your first pass, ignore exception handling, logging, and parameter validation. These will interfere with your understanding of the main flow.
4. Fix a Small Bug
Find a good first issue and try to fix it. Fixing bugs is the fastest way to understand code.
Recommended Reading Order
- Beginner: Redis source code (extremely clean code, written in C)
- Intermediate: Netty core modules (a textbook implementation of the Reactor pattern)
- Advanced: Spring IoC container (a culmination of design patterns)
Mindset
Don't expect to understand everything in one read. Go in with one question each time: "What does this piece of code do?" "Why is it designed this way?"
The biggest takeaway from reading source code isn't "what you understood," but realizing that "something this complex was also written line by line by ordinary programmers."
