The debate between MySQL and PostgreSQL has never stopped. It's 2025 now, and things have shifted a bit.
PostgreSQL's Strengths
- JSON Support: Postgres's JSONB type supports indexing, with query performance far better than MySQL's JSON
- Window Functions: Richer analytical functions (though MySQL 8.0+ has caught up)
- Geospatial: The PostGIS extension is the standard for geospatial data processing
- Concurrency Control: Cleaner MVCC implementation, without MySQL's gap lock issues
- SQL Standard: Better compliance with standard SQL
MySQL's Strengths
- Simplicity: Easier to install, configure, and operate
- Ecosystem: Nearly all ORMs and frameworks prioritize MySQL as their first choice
- Cloud Services: Managed MySQL offerings from major cloud providers are very mature
- Community: Extremely active Chinese community with abundant Chinese-language resources
- Alibaba/Tencent: Domestic tech giants' customized MySQL versions (PolarDB, TDSQL) are very powerful
How to Choose
- Personal projects / rapid prototyping → MySQL (quick to learn, great ecosystem)
- Complex queries / GIS / JSON-heavy workloads → PostgreSQL
- Job hunting in China → MySQL (absolute market share advantage)
- Want to learn "proper" SQL → PostgreSQL
Both are worth learning. Master one first, and you can pick up the other by just reading the docs.
