Kafka has dominated the message queue space for over a decade, but recently many interesting alternatives have emerged.
Redpanda
- A Kafka-compatible implementation rewritten in C++
- No ZooKeeper required (built-in Raft)
- 2-5x higher throughput than Kafka
- Fully compatible with the Kafka API, with low migration costs
WarpStream
- A message queue built on object storage (S3-compatible)
- No local disks needed; data is written directly to S3
- Zero operations: no need to manage brokers
- Slightly higher latency (P99 ~100ms), but extremely low cost
AutoMQ
- Built by a domestic team, based on the S3 Stream architecture
- Compatible with the Kafka protocol
- Automatic elastic scaling
- Storage-compute separation, with costs 50% lower than self-hosted Kafka
Selection Recommendations
- Already using Kafka and don't want to change → stick with it
- New project, self-hosted → consider Redpanda
- Cloud-native, don't want to handle operations → WarpStream / AutoMQ
- Extremely latency-sensitive → Kafka (local disk version)
The message queue landscape will no longer be dominated by a single player like Kafka.
