Where China's Large Models Stand: Observations on the Eve of Kimi K2's Release

Moonshot AI has announced the release of Kimi K2 tomorrow (July 11). At this juncture, I'd like to share my thoughts on the overall landscape of China's large models.

Who's in the First Tier?

The frontrunners among China's large models have largely stabilized:

  • Moonshot AI (Kimi): Best consumer-facing product experience, with long-context capabilities remaining a key differentiator. K1.5's performance late last year was impressive
  • DeepSeek: The most technically capable Chinese AI company. V4 is highly competitive in coding and reasoning, with extremely compelling API pricing
  • Alibaba (Qwen): Best open-source ecosystem. The Qwen 3 series performs consistently across various benchmarks
  • ByteDance (Doubao): Backed by ByteDance's traffic and compute resources, with solid product execution, though model capabilities still need to be proven
  • Zhipu (GLM): Tsinghua-affiliated with a strong academic foundation, but has less consumer-facing presence compared to the others

Where Are the Real Gaps?

It's not about parameter count. Kimi K2 is rumored to have 1T total parameters (MoE architecture, 32B activated), while DeepSeek V4 is MoE with 240B activated—parameter scales have already caught up with or even surpassed some American models.

The real gaps lie in two areas:

First, long-horizon reasoning and planning. This is the most obvious gap between current American closed-source models (Fable 5, GPT-5.6) and Chinese models. It's not that Chinese models can't reason—it's that on complex reasoning chains exceeding 10 steps, Chinese models still lag in success rate and stability.

Second, agentic capabilities. Getting models to autonomously plan tasks, use tools, and handle exceptions—American models are clearly stronger in this domain. This is also why Fable 5 is regulated—its agentic capabilities are too powerful.

Open Source Is the Biggest Wildcard

Open source is the smartest strategic choice made by China's large model players.

DeepSeek V4 is open source, Qwen 3 is open source, and Kimi K2 is reportedly also partially open sourcing. Why? Because open source can: - Quickly earn developer trust and gather usage feedback - Build ecosystem moats (once everyone fine-tunes on your model, switching costs rise) - Counter U.S. export controls (open-source models aren't subject to export restrictions)

Llama 4 and Mistral are doing the same thing. Open source is becoming the "Android model" of the AI era—closed-source models (Fable 5/GPT-5.6) dominate the high end, while open-source models cover the remaining 80% of use cases.

A Prediction

Kimi K2's benchmarks will likely look impressive—it may surpass GPT-5 in coding and Chinese comprehension. But the real test isn't benchmarks; it's stability in real-world usage.

The "last mile" of model capability—consistency, hallucination rates, instruction following—is the hardest part.

If Kimi K2 can approach GPT-5's level on these dimensions, it won't just be "China's strongest model"—it'll be a contender that can truly compete with the world's top models.
